Fic: Snow PG Dom/Bill
Title: Snow
Pairing Billy/Dom
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: If it had happened, they would have made me run out for cocoa and marshmallows anyway, so I wouldn't have seen it anyway. Not mine, never were.
Notes: For
bayliss, who pushes me almost as much as
kiltsandlollies and
hipolyta_d to read while sitting by the fire looking at the snow fall.
Billy could remember his sister's parting words as she left. In the month that Dom had been staying at the house, she had treated Dom like a brother. Billy knew she had grown fond of Dom, and he supposed that would make it easier for him to come to terms with his own feelings for his best friend. He knew he was enamored, but he didn't know if he could tell Dom.
"You've gone and done it, you brought him here, after all. You need to tell him you've fallen in love with him," she had said, whispering at the front door so Dom wouldn't hear.
"I didnae ..." Billy started before his sister hushed him, glancing behind him at Dom, coming closer to see her off.
"Billy, in blin oors you'll hannae ilk ither, 'sa shame." In the dark hours, you'll not have each other, she said in Gaelic so to not embarrass Bill in front of Dom.
Dominic came close to hug her, and Billy smiled, replying. "I didnae daur us sinder." I didn't dare to part us.
Dominic smiled as he closed the door behind her. "You don't play fair,I'll start swearing in German soon." Turning back he saw Billy's face change from that of cordial host to that of a pensive man, obviously troubled.
"I don't listen when you swear at me in English, why would I start listening in German?" Billy retorted far too quickly.
It was going to be a long night.
Whatever Bill's sister had said had hurt him, Dominic thought. No, it wasn't hurt. Hurt, Dom could deal with. You hurt Billy, I'll kick your ass ... No, this was sadness. Sadness that drew Bill's eyes downward, erased the carefree, laughing crinkle of his nose and offered only a grim, hard won smile in return. He can't begin to know how much he means to me, thought Dominic, looking at Billy's back.
Seeing the snowfall outside taper to nothing through the living room window, Bill said softly, "I've seen the snow fall every year I've been alive, I imagine."
"It's always a different snow though, isn't it?" Dom came to stand next to him. Both their hands were on the sill, close to touching, but not. "Every time. A blizzard, a fine mist. The outcome's always the same though,a white wash of pure bliss."
"I suppose so," Billy said after a few minutes of silence. "Until someone comes and tramples through it." Billy sighed and pushed himself away from the window, back to the table where they had been working on the script.
The script was a true collaborative effort. They spent hours bouncing ideas around, tutting when one thought the other could do better. We always connect when we are working, Billy thought. But outside of that, he wouldn't have me.
Dominic put his hand on Billy's and tried to amuse his friend out of this restless, somber mood he was in. "Hiya, hiya," Dom smiled.
"Aye." Billy's gaze went from Dom's hand to the script pages before him. "Okay, two daft gits from the UK who go and surf all over the world and the crazy antics they get up to. Now where were we?"
Dom watched Billy's face change again. Always acting, Dom thought. Billy was being the fun guy now, the go to guy for the set up of the next punchline. This time, Dominic had no joke.
"Billy, we can work on this later. I mean, we have all week left.” Dominic squeezed Billy's hand.
"Dom, now ... I mean tonight, is best," Billy replied, moving his hand away slowly. I won't have it in me tomorrow he thought to himself.
They worked back and forth, laughing, arguing, drinking. A six-pack and three whiskeys later, the laptop battery had died. They called it a night.
Dominic walked in front of Billy as the moonlight illuminated the path through the house to their bedrooms.
“Billy, it's snowing again,” Dominic said breathlessly, grabbing Billy's hand and bringing him toward the hall window.
Billy looked out the window and then back at Dominic, whose eyes were filled with wonderment and childlike joy at the huge crystalline flakes coming down. Billy squeezed Dominic's hand and then quickly kissed his lips.
"A white wash of pure bliss," Billy whispered, drawing away from Dom's startled but beaming face.
"Daurne sinder, no malie my lane ..." Dare not part us, don't let me lie alone, Dom replied, smiling as he led a very pleasantly surprised Billy to his bed.
