“So let me get this straight, baby brother, cause I’m not sure I’m one hundred percent clear. You want me to let you borrow my car while Mom’s at work because you want to go meet your forty something year old boyfriend’s son but you’re afraid if he picks you up the paparazzi might have a field day. Is that about the size of it?”

“Zach, be nice. Viggo seems like a great guy!” Hannah broke in, facing her brothers on the couch opposite and feeling a bit like she was watching world war three about to break out.

“Viggo might be a great guy, Han. In fact, I’m sure he’s a great guy. A great forty year old guy whom I am not letting anywhere near my eighteen year old brother!” Zach exclaimed.

“I’m nearly nineteen now, Zach,” Elijah reasoned.

“Elijah, that is so far beside the point it is in the next room. You’ve got to be out of your mind!” Zach protested.

“Zach, I don’t think you understand the situation, here,” Elijah reasoned, though his knuckles were growing white against the cushions.

“No, I don’t think you understand it,” Zach countered. “You’re young, you’re talented, you’re very handsome, and the man is taking advantage of you! I don’t care if you’re gay, ‘Lij, you know I couldn’t give a flying fuck about what gender you choose to sleep with, but this guy is more than twice your age! His son is only seven years…”

“Stop it!” Hannah yelled, flying out of her seat with such speed that both men stopped what they were doing and stared at her. “Stop it, both of you! I’m fifteen years old and I think I have a better handle on my emotions than anyone in this room! Now what does that say for the two of you? God, Zach! Calm the fuck down!” Zach’s eyes went a bit wide with his younger sister’s language, but he didn’t say anything. “And you, Elijah, I know how you feel about Viggo, but maybe it would be okay just to have him pick you up. The paparazzi may be crazy, but what are they going to think, really? I mean, the age difference is just enough to make it absurd. No one’s really going to think that a forty year old actor is picking up his eighteen year old co-star in LA because they’re dating.”

“Hannah, don’t you get it?” Zach put in suddenly. “There’s a reason why they think it’s absurd! Because it is! Are you ever going to let us meet this crazy son-of-a-bitch at least, Elijah? Or is he just going to remain your dirty little secret?”

Elijah, finally, had had enough. Leaping to his feet, he trained fiery blue eyes on his brother that had even the normally composed twenty-five year old looking a little nervous.

“Zachary Wood, you may be a hell of a lot taller than me but I can still kick your skinny ass. How dare you insult my boyfriend in front of me without even having the audacity to meet him? I would be happy to introduce you, in fact I’ll scream his name from the rooftops if you really want me to, but if I do that you damned well know I’ll be out of a job. You of all people know about discretion. You grew up with me, Zach, you remember how it is!” Elijah exclaimed, feeling his face begin to hot.

“Yeah, I remember how it is all right!” Zach yelled back, rising to his full height. “I remembered being pulled the fuck out of house and home because of your career! I remember being seventeen years old, just about to graduate high school, and having to up and move to LA because my baby brother was already making more than I would for another five years to come!”

“Zach. This isn’t about Viggo, is it?” Elijah interrupted suddenly, his tone frighteningly calm. “If this is about you and me, then just come out and say it, but don’t you dare use him as a scapegoat. If you want to meet him like a civilized human being, I would be more than welcome to invite him to our home, but don’t bring him into something that's clearly about us. God, Zach; that was eight years ago! If you had a problem, why didn’t you say it then?”

“How could I, Elijah? Honestly, how could I? Mom was thrilled! Grandma and Grandpa were thrilled… everyone was so thrilled that you were a success; I could never go up against that.”

“Dad wasn’t thrilled,” Elijah whispered, and a silence suddenly fell over the room. No one moved for a few moments, until Hannah cautiously stepped forward and wrapped both arms around her youngest brother.

“Oh, ‘Lijah…” Elijah leaned slightly into her embrace, but didn’t take his eyes away from Zach’s. For a minute, they just stared at each other, and then, slowly, Zach left the room. Sighing, Elijah gently pulled out of Hannah’s arms and pulled his cell phone out of his pocket.

“Vig? Hey, it’s me. Um, I think I’m going to need you to pick me up tomorrow after all…’
