Chapter Eighteen - Fate

He waited until the lights turned off.

He waited until the last guard had closed the door before taking the vial from
underneath his pillow and staring at it.

“Drink it all. They’ll think you’re dead. You’ll awake 24 hours from now,
with Elijah at your side.” Viggo had said.

Dom took a deep breath, uncorked the tiny bottle and lifted it to his lips.

“I’m coming Elijah. I love you.”

He swallowed it all, choking as the deadly liquid burned down his throat.
Within seconds his whole body went numb. He grasped the bar of the cot as his
vision blurred.

“I’m coming Elijah…”

He dropped back onto the cot, all life ghosting away from him until he was as
cold as death.

~

Viggo raced around his apartment, searching for his keys. He was late.
Christine had found him this morning to tell him Dominic was dead. She wanted
to talk to him as a priest. He had listened, all the while knowing Dom was
really alive. Christine was thankful Dom was gone, knowing that he had killed
her husband, but she knew about Elijah. She asked him to tell him that no
matter who he loved, that she loved him too.

Viggo felt a tenderness towards Christine that he had not expected. She had
cried until there were no more tears to shed. Viggo had taken her home, then
come back to his studio to get ready to drive to Altrincham. Somewhere between
now and then, his keys had disappeared.
Precious seconds ticked away as panic began to fill him. Only two hours before
Dom awoke, and Elijah was still in Altrincham, completely unaware of Viggo’s
plan.

~

Marco stood outside the jail, watching in horror as a hearse arrived in front
and the body of Dominic Monaghan was loaded into the back. Choking back tears
of pain, he ran to the car, knowing that Elijah didn’t know. Oh God, he had to
tell him! He sped away, heading out of the city.

~

Viggo found his keys and raced outside. A sick feeling had settled in the pit
of his stomach and he was afraid. Something was wrong. He had waited too
long. They would have taken Dom away by now. He had to get Elijah, and fast.
He got into his old battered car and drove out of the city, knowing that
praying to God was useless, but doing it anyway.

~

Elijah paced around the empty studio, waiting for Orlando to come back for him,
though he didn’t know when that would be. He’d been here two days now, and his
whole body felt heavy and empty without Dominic. He prayed that Orlando would
have Dom with him when he arrived. The sound of a car pulling into the parking
lot tore him from his reverie. Relief washed through him but drained away
quickly when he looked out to see Marco.

“Marco? Why is he here?” he thought out loud, running to the door and hugging
the younger man.

“Marco! What’s going on? Where’s Orlando? Where’s Dominic?”

Marco’s face was bone white.

“Elijah.” he breathed, his voice hitching terribly.

Elijah’s stomach rolled sickly as he stared at the shaking young man. He let
him go and Marco stepped back.

“Elijah, Dom…Dom is…”

“Dom’s what?” Elijah cried.

“Dominic is dead.”

~

Dead.

Dominic was dead.

“How.” He asked quietly, his soul screaming.

“I don’t know…but I saw them take his body out of the jail.”

Elijah stepped away, feeling a horrible sick coldness sweep through him.

Dead.

His mind reeled.

His lover, his husband, was gone.

“Where…where did they take him?”

“To the funeral home I’m sure…” Marco answered shakily.

Elijah turned his face to the unforgiving black sky.

“Then I will join him there.”

He grabbed Marco’s keys and walked towards the car.

“Elijah wait! Wait! Don’t!” Marco called, but it was too late. Elijah got
in the car and sped away, heading back to Manchester.

Marco watched the car disappear. He lifted his head to the cold star-less sky
and wept.

~

An hour later, Viggo pulled into the parking lot, his heart clenching in fear
as Marco stepped out of the building and ran to the car.

“Elijah’s gone. He went…”

“Get in the car!” Viggo cried.

He did so and Viggo turned around, knowing it was already too late. It would
take fifty minutes to get to Manchester, even at top speed, and Dom would awake
in less than five minutes.

Please God…I know I’ve fucked up. I know I left your service…I know I’m only
human. Please don’t let Elijah do what I think he’s going to do…

~

Elijah easily picked the lock and walked into the funeral home and saw the
sight that he was dreading.

Dominic lay lifeless on a table, a sheet draped over his magnificent body.

It was exactly like his vision.

Elijah choked back a sob, walked to the table and drew back the sheet. Dom
didn’t even look dead. His face was flushed and his lips were warm as Elijah
kissed them. Tears cascaded down his cheeks as he stared at the man he loved.

“I promised to follow wherever you went.” He said softly.

His hand was clutched tightly around the razor sharp switchblade he had found
in Marco’s glove box.

Agggghhh watching any version of Romeo and Juliet is bad enough for me, but at least with this I don't have to put up with Leonardo DiCaprio's ugly mug.
*waaaaahhhhhhhhhh*

*bites nails*....I'm getting really worried now....he can't do that, he just can't!....Sunday is too far away!

(Great job on this chapter by the way. The switching POVs makes it feel all the more dramatic.)
