"No," David said firmly, shaking his head for emphasis.

"No?" Miranda returned, smiling from ear to ear, unable to help herself. David was blushing all the way to the tips of his ears and shaking his head adamantly at her.

"You heard me, Mirry," he said feeling decidedly uncomfortable. Of all the people to ask him such a thing, of all the people to *notice* in the first place, it made David feel even more awkward.

"I know you want to," she said unable to keep herself from laughing, when David turned an even more alarming shade of red.

David stared at the blonde for a moment and looked down at the floor. "I may want to, but…he doesn't…he…we aren't children, you can't just dare me to do something like that."

“Sure I can…in fact…I just did," she giggled when David loosed an exasperated sigh. Taking pity on him she reached over and tipped his head up.

"Hey…he does, David. He does look at you, the same way you look at him. I would never have even brought it up if I didn't think there was a chance," she smiled sweetly, "a chance that you'd find the happiness you deserve, David."

David sighed and looked up at her. "It really is unfair of you, of all people, to dare me to…to kiss Craig," he said softly.

"Why, me of all people?" Miranda was confused.

"Because, when he doesn't respond…when he shoves me away or whatever, I can't get you back. At least not the way I would if it was Sean or Hugo," he explained.

Miranda giggled imagining exactly what David would do to Sean or Hugo. "You won't have to get back at me, I promise you David…he *won't* react badly. So come on…I dared you," she cajoled.

"If I have a black eye tomorrow and Peter gets in a snit over it, I'm going to tell him truthfully that it's all your fault."

Miranda smiled and shook her head. "He won't react that way."

David still wasn't so sure, but if Miranda had noticed how he looked at Craig…and she seemed convinced that there was more in Craig's eyes than friendship toward David, then…maybe he should take the chance?

Not wanting to allow Miranda to keep teasing him, he decided to throw caution to the wind and go and find Craig. He'd just seen him step out on the little back deck behind Viggo's house, and decided if he was going to make a fool of himself at least he'd have a little bit of privacy.

Stepping out onto the deck he took a deep breath as he watched Craig standing at the rail along the deck and looking out toward the beach. //God he is so damn gorgeous. I can't do this. Not on a dare…not…not at all.// Before David could back peddle to the door, Craig spotted him and smiled. Suddenly David felt trapped, he couldn't go back inside, and if he stayed out here, he wouldn't be able to think of anything but the dare. The dare to kiss those lips he'd dreamed of for weeks now.

Craig felt his heart skip a beat as David stood in the doorway and seemed to be frozen in place. //Probably looking for Sean. Everyone’s always looking for Sean. Or Viggo. Or Orli. Damn, I wish he were looking for *me* though.// Shaking his head at himself, Craig stifled a sigh and nodded in David’s direction. “Hey, Daisy,” he grinned, “looking for someone or did you come to admire the view?”

Somewhat shocked by Craig's question, David hovered in the doorway for a moment. "Uh...well, actually," he paused for a moment and brought his hand up to rub the back of his neck in a habitual gesture of nervousness, "I...well...I was looking for you." He was glad for the darkness surrounding them, so that Craig couldn't see the almost constant blush he'd worn since Miranda had first dared him.

Craig’s smile widened and he told himself not to get excited, that at most, David wanted him to set him up with someone, but he couldn’t stop the butterflies that were suddenly flying around in his stomach. “Well,” he said, unable to take his eyes off the other man, “you found me. What can I do for you”? //Please, please, please don’t ask me to set you up with someone else…I can’t. Not you. Anyone but you, David.//

David smiled as Craig said he'd found him and took a few steps closer. He stopped at the railing Craig was leaned against and looked out toward the beach. "Beautiful night," he whispered. He was trying to get up the nerve to actually follow through on the 'dare'. If it hadn't meant so much to him, David might have been more forward, but this...*Craig* meant too much to him. He could feel Craig's eyes on him but he was afraid to turn toward the other man. Miranda's words echoed in his mind. //He won't react that way.//

“It certainly is,” Craig agreed. //It is now that you’re out here, anyway.// “It got a little crowded inside, so I thought I’d come out here for a breath of fresh air. The hobbits were getting a little loud for my taste, with all that dancing and carrying on.”

David laughed and nodded in agreement. "They do tend to get a little...wild," he decided. Turning slightly, he hadn't realized just how close they were standing and he bumped into Craig gently. His breath caught for a moment as they stared into one another's eyes and he completely forgot anything about a dare, completely forgot where they were, forgot everything except the beautiful eyes before him that sparkled in the moonlight. Before he could think about it, before he could talk himself out of it, his hands grasped Craig's shoulders and his lips were soon pressed against Craig's. They were softer than he'd dreamed they would be and then he realized that Craig was standing almost stiffly and he drew away quickly. "I...I...shouldn't have...I'm sorry," he whispered quickly trying to back away.

Craig had been taken completely by surprise as David’s lips had sealed over his own. Before he could even react, David had pulled away, leaving Craig staring dumbly across the small space that divided them, his heart in his throat, and his lips still tingling from the gentle pressure of the kiss. As David began moving backward, Craig realized he was nervous and stammering, apologizing for giving Craig the one thing he’d wanted since the moment he’d laid eyes on the red-head. “Don’t you dare run away from me after *that*,” he said, closing the distance between them until David was backed up against the railing. Before David could utter a word, Craig rested his hands on the other man’s hips and tried to see his face despite the darkness that surrounded them. “At least, don’t run away until you kiss me one more time and give me a chance to respond like I want to.”

David felt his stomach muscles tighten as Craig advanced, backing him against the rail. The apology he was about to utter died on his lips as Craig continued. //give me a chance to respond like I want to.// When the words registered, he barely had time to think of anything else before Craig's lips were against his own again and it was suddenly better than anything he could have dreamed. Craig's lips moved against his, gently, teasingly and when David's lips parted in a soft sigh, Craig's tongue moved against his own. His arms wrapped around the dark haired man and he simply lost himself in the kiss. His blood was humming in his ears and one hand slid into soft dark hair to cradle Craig's head as the kiss turned from halting and sweet to something even more incredible.

They kissed for long moments, and by the time they pulled away for air, Craig’s head was spinning and he had both arms wrapped around David, holding him close. He didn’t want the kiss to end, so he simply let his lips move over David’s jawline and neck, gently licking and nipping at warm skin, afraid that he’d never have this opportunity again in his lifetime. “God, you have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that,” he whispered between kisses as David’s arms held him tightly and his own hands moved over the other man’s lower back.

Dazed and breathless, David shivered as Craig's lips trailed downward along his neck, and he unconsciously tipped his head back to give him more access. His heart was hammering against his chest and when Craig spoke, he felt it stumble in his chest. "Really?" he murmured. "I...I've wanted that too," he whispered. No kiss he'd ever experienced in his life could have prepared him for the sheer *feeling* he had from kissing Craig. "I've dreamed about it...about...*you* for weeks, Craig," he admitted softly.

“You have?” Craig asked, finally pulling away and smiling shyly at David. “I had no idea. Liv kept telling me that I should just ask you out, or *something*, but I didn’t think you’d be interested. I guess I was wrong, thankfully.” Sighing as he rested his head against David’s shoulder, Craig closed his eyes and felt as if his heart would beat out of his chest. “Think they’d miss us if we took a walk on the beach?”

David almost laughed when Craig said that Liv had been the one telling him to ask him out. He wondered if the two ladies had somehow both been trying to nudge them together since he and apparently Craig too, had been too shy to act on how they felt. "I don't think they'd miss us," he whispered. //God, now that I have you in my arms I don't want to let you go.// Regretfully they drew apart, but David's hand slid down to take Craig's in his own, and wondering at how perfectly their hands fit together. "Besides, I don't feel like sharing you, and I know if we stay here a gaggle of hobbits may come spilling out that door any moment," he grinned.

Craig’s fingers curled around David’s and he leaned up to press a chaste kiss against already kiss-swollen lips. “I’m all yours,” he smiled as they began to walk down the steps toward the beach, not noticing Miranda and Liv as they stood at the sliding glass doors and watched the two men walk away, grinning broadly and feeling inordinately happy with themselves.

Stopping to take their shoes off at the bottom of the stairs, Craig looked back toward Viggo’s house and squeezed David’s hand. “Why do I get the feeling we’ve been had?” he laughed as the girls waved and pulled the curtains closed, affording Craig and David some privacy from the eyes that were already glancing out to see who had paired up this time.

David laughed as Craig spoke and nodded in agreement. "I don't think I mind," he smiled and felt his heart skip when Craig returned his smile.

They never made it back to the party, instead they talked and shared the sweetest of kisses until dawn. Then they ended up back at Craig's house.

Before drifting off to sleep in his lover's arms early that morning, David made a mental note to send Miranda roses. The card he sent read: "Thank you for forcing me to do more than simply daring to dream."

Miranda continued to receive roses every year, on the same date after that.
