Summary: A wealthy businessman is forced to do volunteer work and meets a handsome social worker who changes his views about the homeless and about love.

Craig adjusted the black tie of his tux and reached over to straighten David’s. They’d walked hand in hand through the hotel lobby, toward one of the large back rooms that were used exclusively for large, upscale parties and he’d noticed the looks that several of the guests had given David. He certainly did cut a handsome figure in his black tux, with his copper colored hair brushed back and his blue eyes sparkling as he laughed at something Craig had just said. He knew David hated these kinds of gatherings, and Craig had to admit that he’d be glad when the evening was over as well.
David had asked him earlier if he was nervous, and Craig had answered honestly that he wasn’t. He’d never cared in the least for what others thought, but was touched that David would actually want to bring him into this part of his world…the glamorous world of the rich and sometimes famous, of which Craig knew very little, and cared about even less.
They stopped in the hall and Craig squeezed David’s hand, giving him an encouraging smile. “If you need me to drift away while you talk business or anything, squeeze my hand twice and I’ll make myself scarce,” he whispered. “And I promise I’ll try my best not to give a speech about how all this money could better be spent helping out some of the people back at my shelter, rather than on caviar and pâté.”
David laughed, "I know, I never even thought about such things before working at the shelter, but you're right. And I don't think I will give you that signal, but thanks for the offer," he said softly. Turning to the doorman, David reached into his jacket and pulled out the invitation handing it to the other man. Once the door opened he thought about his asking Craig if he was nervous earlier. If Craig asked him that same question now he'd say yes, very much so. He was always nervous at these damn parties. He hated them but he *had* to be there. This merger had taken too much time and planning already, and not showing up would have been taken as an insult. "Into the lions den," he murmured not even realizing he'd said the thought aloud.
Craig smiled and nodded. He didn’t like this either…having to pretend he was having a good time, when all he could really think about was the waste of money and resources. The food on one of these tables alone would feed his entire shelter for days. But there was no way in hell he was going to embarrass David. He loved him too much to even consider doing that.
As soon as they passed through the large, ornate doors, several men in tuxedos and women in formal gowns made their way to David’s side, shaking his hand and congratulating him on the merger. Their eyes drifted over Craig, then dismissed him at once, making it perfectly clear that they knew he not one of “them” and didn’t bear anything more than a fake smile that was obviously more for David’s sake than Craig’s own. //God, it’s going to be a long night.//
David forced a smile and shook the hands of the people who came up to him, as he tried to introduce Craig though he'd been cut off more than once and cut his eyes to Craig beside him apologetically. He squeezed his hand but still held it firmly. He knew it would be like this. Once his eyes found Marton he felt more relieved and walked purposefully toward his vice president, thankful that he was already there. "Marton, I'd like you to meet Craig. Craig Parker this is Marton Csokas, my vice president," David said smiling.
Marton smiled at Craig and took his hand, "Nice to meet you, Craig. I understand I should thank you for getting to run lead on this merger," he said smiling. He could see exactly why David was so taken with the younger man. He was gorgeous, and from everything David had said about him, he was intelligent and friendly. Qualities that were rare in the world he and David had to work in.
Craig shook Marton’s hand with a smile, thinking that besides David’s this was the first sincere smile he’d seen since entering the room. From what he’d understood from David, Marton was loyal and more than capable of handling the company, and Craig was grateful that his competence had freed David up to spend more time away from the office. “Pleasure to meet you, Marton,” he grinned. “I’m sure it was your own hard work that managed to seal that up for you, but thanks anyway. I’m just grateful that you’re there to keep things running smoothly so David can learn to relax a bit. He’s told me how much he trusts and depends on you.”
Marton smiled brightly as Craig spoke and looked over at David, "I try," he said feeling proud.
David shook his head, "Don't tell him things like that, Craig, he'll think I actually *like* him," David teased. "So is he here?" he asked referring to their 'host' for the evening. Marton frowned and nodded, "Yeah, in all his grandeur. He has the mayor penned up over in the corner bending his ear right now about those properties again," Marton said with a frown.
David rolled his eyes, "He's persistent, I'll give him that," he murmured. A waiter walked by with a tray of champagne and the three men each took a glass. "This is gona be a long, boring night for you, Craig. I'm glad you are sticking with me," David whispered brushing a soft kiss against his temple. He didn't even notice the look of shock that registered on Marton's face as he did that.
Craig leaned over and pressed a kiss of his own to David’s cheek. “I’m not complaining one bit,” he said softly, giving his lover’s hand a gentle squeeze. Noticing that Marton was staring at them both with an odd look, he laughed, thinking that Marton disapproved of their public displays of affection. “Sorry, Marton. I know you’ve both got business to attend to. I’ll try and keep my hands…and lips….to myself for a while.”
Marton shook his head, "No...no, I just. I've known David for twelve years and I've never seen him kiss anyone....ever. Sorry just threw me for a moment. Well...I um, I'm feeling a bit like a third wheel here...I think I'm going to go find my date...wherever they wandered off to. I'll catch up with you later," he said leaving the couple alone and still a bit stunned. David *really* cared about this Craig.
David watched as Marton made his hasty get away and shook his head, "Yeah...see you later," he said as Marton walked away. David turned to Craig and smiled. "So...want to see if we can blend into the wallpaper for a while? If Ian has the mayor trapped it may be a while before I can do my ass kiss and we can leave," David said softly.
Craig looked after Marton in stunned silence. He’d *never* seen David kiss anyone? David was always so loving with him, it was hard to believe that he hadn’t always been this way. //Maybe he sees me differently after all. Maybe our relationship really is something special to him.// Smiling up at his lover, he nodded. “Anything you like, love. This is your world. I’m just here for support and the occasional groping of your sexy tuxedoed backside.” He leaned closer and whispered softly, wanting David to relax and enjoy himself, if that were at all possible. “If we weren’t in such polite company, I’d say I wanted to grope your tuxedoed *ass*, but this probably isn’t the place for that.”
David chuckled a bit louder than he would have normally in a place like that and drew several stares. His face flushed in a rare blush and he shook his head, "Well... I don't think I mind either description," he grinned. Spotting Dom leaning against the wall with his date, David made their way over there, all the while giving polite nods or hello's to people they passed on their way. "Thank God, someone we know," he said as they stopped in front of Dom. Dom laughed and shook his head, "You really do hate these things....you should relax. See… Craig's relaxed," he grinned lifting his glass toward Craig. "I'm just hanging out until Ian makes his speech then I'll go back to the office like the good little assistant I am and fax the final releases to Hong Kong. Just need the old bugger to finally give the word," he said shaking his head.
Craig nodded at Dom and lifted his glass in return. He’d liked they young man since they’d first met, and could see that he did everything possible to keep David up to date on their day to day business, while handling as much of it as he could by himself. He really *did* have David’s best interests at heart, and Craig would be forever grateful to him for setting up David’s volunteer work at the shelter, though he was sure the poor young man had taken his share of unkind words for that at the beginning. “This McKellan fellow sounds like he’s quite the well loved gentleman,” he laughed softly, looking across the room and studying the tall elderly man who was holding court with the mayor and several other guests. “I’m sure you’re all going to be glad to wrap this up.”
"You have *no* idea," David said taking a sip of his champagne. "We've all been on pins and needles because he has a tendency to back out of merger's at the last minute. This one is a done deal once he and Mr. Marquez make the announcement tonight and sign the contract. Then Dom faxes it to Hong Kong, and then the entire mess will be out of our laps at least if there are no problems with the merger. My company is sort of a 'silent' partner on this, we set up mergers, fund them, and then baby sit them until the kinks are worked out. On average 80% of all mergers fail, we have a 95% batting average," he said with a grin. "That's why he came to us, right Dom?" David added.
Dom smiled. David had never referred to the company as an 'us' before, he distinctly always remembered him saying "that's why people come to me'. It was his company but it seemed since he started dating Craig he looked at the entire world differently, even himself. "That's right, boss," Dom grinned. "So what are you two doing to celebrate once all this mess is over?" he asked curiously.
David shook his head, "I have no idea, we haven't really planned anything other than going home, and getting out of these and maybe just vegging out in front of the TV or something. Once you fax the papers you going out and doing something to celebrate later?" David asked, wondering if maybe he should have planned to do something with Craig to celebrate. In truth all he really wanted to do was go home with his lover, either his own place or Craig's house and just curl up together.
Dom nodded, "Yeah, going to a nightclub later...though I don't think that's exactly yours or Craig's scene," he grinned as he saw David already shaking his head.
Craig shook his head as well. “No, my scene is a nice evening at home alone with David,” he laughed, releasing his lover’s hand and sliding it around his waist. “I’ve never been the nightclub kind of guy myself, and somehow I don’t think David ever was either.” He glanced over toward the corner where McKellan had been only a moment earlier and raised his eyebrows. “Incoming at 9 o’clock,” he whispered, seeing their host making his way toward David. He moved his hand back down to take David’s, not sure if David would want to be seen ‘cuddling’ or not. “Want me to make myself scarce?” he asked quietly. He could tell that he wasn’t going to like the old gentleman merely from David’s description of him, and seeing him in person only reinforced that fact.
"Oh God," David shook his head, "No, I'd rather you stayed.” He saw Dom trying to inch away he glared at him, "You too dammit."
Dom laughed and nodded. David turned just as Ian approached and held his hand out to him, "Ian, well tonight's the night," he said smiling. The older man took David's hand and cast a condescending look at both Craig and Dom on either side of David. "That it is....why is it every time you come to one of these things, David you end up against the wall? Not comfortable around your peers? That is what they are...though I guess they aren't your peers exactly are they?" he asked releasing David's hand.
David frowned and stared at the older man for a moment, "I guess to be my peers they'd all need slightly larger bank accounts," David said flatly which earned a deep laugh from Ian.
"True. Too true in fact. And yours is much newer money. You are the wonder boy though aren't you. And who is this?" he asked turning his attention toward Craig and ignoring David's assistant completely. Why the man insisted on bringing his assistant to these gatherings he had no idea. Obviously the boy didn't belong here, and looking at the handsome young man so steadfastly holding David's hand, he surmised that he didn't belong there either.
Craig felt a burning ember of anger as the elderly gentleman ignored Dom and spoke of ‘newer money’. He’d probably lived with money his entire life, and it was more than obvious that he thought he was better than those who didn’t have it, or had to work for it, like David had. “I’m Craig. Craig Parker,” he said, forcing himself to smile for David’s sake as he offered his free hand. “I’m David’s date for the evening.” He almost said it was a pleasure to meet him, but knew he couldn’t say that and mean it. So he simply kept the smile on his face and dropped his hand after a moment, when he realized McKellan wasn’t going to shake it.
David watched the exchange and his eyes narrowed. "Craig is my boyfriend. He runs the Mercer Street Shelter where I volunteer," David offered knowing that he was probably making things worse, but honestly most people he'd met had thought that it was wonderful what Craig did for a living. Not everyone was like Ian or like he himself was before he met Craig. He felt ashamed for a moment that he even could have thought those things.
Ian raised an eyebrow as David said the words 'boyfriend' and that he runs a shelter. "A homeless shelter? How...quaint. I didn't know you'd taken on charity work," Ian said, never taking his eyes from David's. The edge to his words had the effect that he'd intended as he saw fire flare in David's eyes. Before David could react Dom interrupted and said something about the merger that took the focus off both David and Craig for the moment.
Craig swallowed his anger. He was used to this type of reaction himself, but seeing it directed at David made him furious. He was determined not to say anything and screw this deal up for David, but it took every ounce of willpower he had. Torn between staying by his lover’s side and wanting to get out of his way before he said something he shouldn’t, his eyes met David’s and he gently squeezed his hand. A small part of him rejoiced that David had called him his boyfriend in front of someone like Ian…he’d wanted to introduce himself as such, but wasn’t sure if that was the impression David wanted to give, and had decided to err on the side of caution. //He’s not ashamed of me anyway. This McKellan prick obviously doesn’t like it, but at least David doesn’t mind.// Taking a deep breath, he shook his head slightly as he continued to gaze at his lover. “I’m sorry,” he mouthed silently.
David leaned over and whispered in Craig's ear, "Don't be." After Ian answered Dom's question David looked at him, "Well we should let you get on with the festivities. As soon as you and Mr. Marquez sign the contract, Dom will fax it to Hong Kong just as planned," David said forcing himself to be amicable. Ian nodded and said good evening to them all.
David turned to Dom. "Once you get that contract in your hands, use the fax machine at the front desk, he still has fifteen days to change his mind but he won't if you can get those papers faxed tonight. He'll want not want to go back on it after that," David said quickly.
Dom nodded and headed off to make sure he was very close to the table where the paperwork was going to be signed. David turned to Craig, "I wish he hadn't chosen a party of all things to do this at, but he's the client. Once he signs those papers and I sign what I need to we can leave," he said squeezing Craig's hand gently. "I'm sorry he was so rude."
“Nothing to be sorry for, love,” Craig said softly. “I just didn’t like the way he was being rude to you. Assholes like that make me furious. You’re a million times the man he is, and you don’t have to rub it in everyone’s faces.”
"I used to, I used to be just like him," David murmured softly. "I can't wait to get out of here. I've always hated these things, but I was sort of enjoying myself before he walked up."
“I don’t think you give yourself enough credit,” Craig said, shaking his head vehemently. “You may have been different than you are now, but I’m sure you weren’t a condescending little prick like him.” He signaled a passing waiter and set his glass on the tray, then reached for David’s. Replacing both with fresh glasses, he toasted his lover and smiled. “I refuse to let a foolish old man like that ruin your evening. If you don’t smile right this minute, I’m going to break out in song and *really* embarrass you. Much as I love you, I’ll do it, sweetheart. It’s for your own good.”
David laughed and shook his head, "Thank you," he grinned pulling Craig's hand up and pressing a soft kiss against his fingers. He knew that he had been a selfish jerk before he met Craig. He wasn't sure if Craig would ever understand just how much he had changed David in the few months they had been dating. "Unfortunately once he starts to make the announcement we are going to have to move over there close to him. If you want to hang back I'll understand," he said worried that Craig wouldn't want to be anywhere near Ian again and he didn't blame him.
Craig set his glass on the table behind him and reached up to gently cup his lover’s jaw. “I’d like to stay right beside to you,” he smiled. “If you need me to stay here and out of his way for *your* sake, I’ll be glad to, but he doesn’t bother me. As long as he keeps his gnarly old mouth shut about the man I love, we’ll get along just fine.” Craig was perfectly used to the reaction of some of the upper class men and women around the city, and usually chose to ignore it. There were a few rare exceptions, like David and Orlando, who chose to help others and not lord their money around for all to see, but they were few and far between. And besides, he thought, if he planned on being a part of David’s life for the duration, which he definitely did, then he had a feeling he’d need to learn to at least blend in, if not *fit* in with people like the guests at this party.
"No, I'd like you to be by my side, if that was what you wanted," David said smiling. "Come on, looks like he's gathering the drones...I mean guests," he grinned pulling Craig with him toward the table where the documents were laid out.
Craig stifled a giggle and let David lead him across the room. He smiled at Dom, who was doing his best to look awed by Ian, and thought to himself that this must be one of the worst parts of his job. Ian’s head was lowered, and he was talking to one of his lawyers, not trying to lower his voice in the least. Craig looked around the room for a friendly face, spying Marton and giving him a slight nod. He tried to ignore the conversation that drifted across the room as Ian talked to his lawyer, but he heard every last word.
"Can you believe David brought *him* to this? Didn't know the boy was so desperate for a date. Must say I have to hand it to that Craig though, that's one way to keep your shelter funded, land yourself the richest man in the city. Well done, don't you think?" Ian asked his lawyer who simply looked lost and wanting nothing more than to get the contract signed. This thing had drug on far too long in his opinion.
David was talking to Marton and didn't hear what Ian had said but Dom had. Dom leaned over and whispered to Craig. "Ignore him if you can. David doesn't think of you that way. You know that," he whispered knowing that David didn't see Craig that way at all. Never had. He had even told Dom about his trying to get out of the volunteer work with a check and that Craig had ripped it up and stuffed it in his pocket. David knew that Craig didn't love him for his money.
Craig’s face paled and he gave Dom a grateful smile. As long as David knew the truth, nothing else mattered, but it still hurt to hear those words floating around where all of David’s associates could hear them. He’d never really thought David would believe that of him, but he couldn’t help but wonder if Marton and the other executives that worked with him were of that opinion. “Thanks, Dom,” he said softly, resisting the urge to squeeze David’s hand, not wanting him to turn away from Marton and hear Ian’s words. “I….thanks. You know the truth, too, don’t you? That I really love him, and would love him if he didn’t have a dime to his name?”
Dom smiled, "I know. He told me about the check. Not many folks in your position would have turned that down. That proves it to him and to me I think, who cares what that old bastard thinks. David doesn't take much of what he says to heart anyway," Dom assured. "Once this deal is over he'll be glad to be shut of him."
“Thanks again, Dom,” Craig smiled. “I’m glad David’s got you. It makes me worry less about him knowing that you’re around to look after him.” He cleared throat, hoping to at least alert Ian to the fact that he and David were standing right behind him, and praying that he would shut up before David heard anything and got upset.
Ian glanced back at Craig and gave him a condescending smile and then turned back around to start his speech. David rolled his eyes and gave Marton a look that made him nearly laugh. Once Ian had finished his speech that went on far longer than it should have, Mr. Marquez said a few words and they signed the documents. David squeezed Craig's hand gently and then released it to move over to the table. Leaning over he looked at the signatures and dates quickly making sure Ian hadn't missed anything on purpose and then signed his name. Stepping back, he took the documents and handed them off to Dom who quickly made his way from the room as Ian was distracted getting his picture taken with Mr. Marquez. Stepping back to Craig he slid is arm around his waist, "Let's get out of here shall we?"
“Love to,” Craig whispered, still bristling from the look Ian had given him. His own arm slid around David’s waist and he thought that leaving was the best idea he’d heard in a while. He wanted to say something….*anything* to Ian, but tried to look at the bigger picture. He hated these parties, hated the fake smiles and opulence, but he loved David and this was David’s world. He would fit in….he had to, because he loved David too much to give up after only one night. Nodding goodbye to Dom and Marton, he fought the urge to ask Marton if he agreed with Ian or with Dom on his motives for being with David, but decided this wasn’t the time or place. //As long as David knows, nothing else matters. I just hope he’s not having to defend me whenever his so called ‘friends’ see us together.//
David smiled and they made their way back to the car as quickly as they could. He debated where they should go for the evening, "Where now? My place is closer but...if you'd rather go home we can camp out on your couch for a while," he suggested. David had been thinking lately about what a pain it was sometimes for them to shuffle between his apartment and Craig's house. Neither was perfectly located for either of them. Craig was so close to the shelter that sometimes it was hard to get away from everything, plus everyone knew he lived there. David's place was in midtown and thirty minutes away on a good day. He'd been giving some thought to them getting a place together but that was a huge step in a relationship, especially when David couldn't even get past saying those three little words.
Craig shivered in the cold night air and moved closer to his lover. “How about your place?” he asked. “It *is* closer and I’m exhausted. I just want to crash, and I’m not picky about where.” He put on a smile for David’s benefit and tried to push Ian’s words from his mind. “Congratulations on the merger though. I’m glad that’s finally off your shoulders.”
Taking Craig's hand, David led him down the steps toward the car that was waiting. It hadn't been a perfect evening, but at least they'd been together. If he had to endure it alone, David knew he wouldn't be in the good mood that he was in now. The reactions at the party had been expected, even Ian's. David just hoped that Craig truly hadn't taken his words to heart about the way Ian had spoken to him.
Craig slid into the passenger side of the car as the valet opened door, and smiled as David slid behind the wheel and another valet closed both doors in unison. Sliding across the seat, he rested one arm around his lover’s shoulders and untied his tie, knowing that David must be as ready to be rid of it as Craig was. When he was finished, he removed his own and snuggled close as they drove toward David’s house.
David tangled the fingers of one hand with Craig's and they drove the rest of the way to his apartment simply listening to the radio. This was much better than anything they'd done all evening, just holding each other and being together without pretenses and without the outside world bothering them.
