It hurt. God did it ever hurt. When was the last time he’d felt a pain like this? He knew this was just enough time for him to blink and yet it felt as if eons were passing around him at the speed of light. They had to be, why else would all the stars and lights in the universe blur together as they were, rushing around him, through him, blinding him with their excruciating bright light?
Billy was there, he knew that much. His hands were small but they were strong and they were gentle. One was wrapped among his own fingers, squeezing reassuringly as the other deftly wiped a salted tear that fell from a clenched eye. Billy was always so gentle and so loving with him. Bless him for that. His voice was soothing, calming, hypnotic and relaxing as he cooed, whispered and murmured reassurances to him, telling him that everything would be all right soon enough. It was a matter of time.
How could he be all right? He had felt flesh tear, the intrusion of the foreign object into his body where it naturally did not belong and there it remained. Lodged deep within him, muscles flexing around it, trying to force it from his body and feeling it throb to make the pain all the worse. His body wanted it out; he just wanted the pain to stop, for it to be over and finished. This had been unexpected on all fronts, none of them saw this coming and now none of them knew how to react and handle it at the moment. Especially with him writhing, sweating, shaking and moaning in his protests of discomfort and pain.
The blink was finished, his eyes opened once more only to look into Billy’s soft green eyes. Oh his eyes were such a lovely green, such a true colour and so caring and alert; much like a child’s eyes. However, the dark of concern and the furrowed brows had disappeared and he was…laughing. Wait a tick, that wasn’t right. Couldn’t be! Dom propped himself up on his elbow, looking up to his friend.
“Dom, you ninny, it’s just a splinter!” the Scotsman laughed, and the others around him laughed as well. Elijah’s tweaked out giggle standing out prominently among them, of course. Perhaps the blink that lasted for eons was better than the vacant stare that would last a million more that had just begun.
