“Did we... did we lose them?”
“I think so...”
“I don’t see them....”
“I can hear the dogs.”
“Yes, I can as well.”
William and Dominic fell to their knees in the river to slow their heartbeats and catch their breath. The dense forest behind them shielded them from the view of their pursuers.
Dominic’s heart was beating through his chest, desperately. He breathed deep and splashed his face with water from the river to fight off the damp heat of the summer day. As their breath came back to them, Dominic noticed that William was softly crying, kneeling in the water.
Dom sighed sadly, and slipped into the water next to him, gathering the smaller man in his arms. The cool water embraced them both, flowing coolly over their skin, soaking their clothes.
“Do you have it?” Dom asked, dreading both the question and answer.
“Yes.” It came out barely a whisper. “You?”
“I do.” He reached into the satchel over his shoulder and pulled out the ornate dagger that had belonged to his great-great-grandfather. Back when the kingdom was younger, freer. He thought it would be rather poetic that he chose that particular blade.
William’s was a mere butcher’s knife. Rather fitting, that two different instruments so accurately reflected their personalities. William’s blade: plain but strong and dependable. Dominic’s blade: fancy, beautiful and fierce. How they had managed to find each other was a mystery even to them. They both blamed fate.
Dominic held his blade with his left hand, and embraced William, so that the blade tipped up in the direction of his lover’s heart. Slowly, William did the same.
They kissed, passionately at first, tongues dueling, lips mashing, teeth clicking. As the minutes went on, and the sound of the dogs drew a bit nearer, it slowed. They tasted each other one last time, savoring their last precious moments together.
Dominic felt William’s heartbeat through his thin, strong frame. Their lips broke apart, but they touch foreheads instead.
“Ready?” Dominic asked.
William nodded, his eyes squeezed shut. “I don’t want them to get you.”
“They won’t get us, love.” He kissed William’s forehead, nose, and lips.
William finally opened his bright green eyes; they were cloudy with unshed tears. “Why couldn’t they let us be?” He strained upward to kiss Dominic’s forehead, nose and then lips. “I’m ready.”
Dominic inhaled swiftly, driving the blade upwards, straight into William’s heart. “Now, love. Now...” He sobbed, tears escaping rapidly down his cheeks.
William’s mouth fell open at the jolt of pain, but he didn’t release Dominic from his arms. With the last of his fleeing strength, he gripped Dominic firmly and drove his butcher’s knife up into Dominic’s heart. Dominic yelped slightly, gritting his teeth; his head tipped skyward. As the pain faded into a dull throb, they relaxed.
They fell against each other, swaying. “Billy....”
“Dom....”
“I.... ungh... I...”
“I know.... I know...”
With that, they slid into the river. Carried away to a bright, blue peace.
