Part II
“How was your day Lij?” Veronica hopped over the
couch, sitting beside her brother who had a book open
on his lap and was flipping through it.
“Meh, boring,” Elijah shrugged, looking up at her. He
wanted to ask about Orlando, he wanted to learn
something, anything, about the boy but every part of
him told him to stay quiet. “Yours? I saw you made
some new friends.”
Veronica beamed at that, nodding her head. “Yup, they
rock. Lexis is really funny and sweet, she really
makes you feel like her best friend right from the
start. Then there’s Dom and Billy. They are SO cute
together, though apparently not a lot of people like
that… then there’s Orlando. He’s really cool, the best
part is he doesn’t let what other’s think about him,
affect him. He’s cool with just being himself.”
Elijah blinked at her, then nodded, trying not to seem
too interested in this Orlando fellow. Besides, he
didn’t like guys, it shouldn’t matter. And he
definitely didn’t like guys who were gay.
*~*~*~*~*~*
A month into the school year proved to Elijah that
ignoring his thoughts and shoving them to the back of
his mind was the best thing he could ever do. Probably
not the most healthy, but the best if he were going to
make it through.
Unfortunately this made him a jerk, to everyone who
didn’t fit into his football jock standard. Not
surprisingly, that was quite a few people.
“What’s with your brother?” Lexis asked, leaning
closer to Veronica then what should have been normal.
The five, since Veronica had been officially accepted
as part of the group, stood around the front steps,
watching the football guys laugh and wrestle together.
Orlando paid particular attention to Veronica’s answer
as his eyes followed Elijah to were he moved to sit
beside Lindsey, kissing her softly on the mouth. He
had grown quite obsessed with the boy, though he
refused to admit it to anyone. He wasn’t going to be
mocked for having a crush on someone who pretended to
be straight.
“I don’t know, but he’s sure been an ass lately,”
Veronica shrugged, leaning into Lexis’ touch.
“Those who hide in themselves will only find pain and
suffering,” Orlando said expertly, smirking and
looking at the two girls.
“Wow… deep,” Lexis laughed, her arm going to rest on
the other side of Veronica’s hip, as causal as
possible.
“And true,” Billy conceded, squinting in the early
autumn sun that shown down on him. “Orli’s been
reading his poetry, good to know.”
Orlando shrugged, his eyes going back to Elijah. He
couldn’t help it, really he couldn’t. The boy was in
four of his six classes and Orlando had always managed
to position himself so he would have the perfect view
of him. Needless to say, he’d memorized every outer
curve that could be seen.
The warning bell rang and Dom and Billy said a goodbye
in unison before heading inside. Lexis whispered
something in Veronica’s ear that made her giggle
slightly, kiss Lexis’ cheek and head inside.
Orlando turned to her, a smile on her face. “So you
and Ve are…?”
“Not together,” Lexis supplied, a soft smile on her
own lips as Orlando walked beside her and they headed
indoors. “But getting there.”
Just then Orlando was pushed from the side, stumbling
backwards off the stairs and landing with a thud on
the hard cement, a body on top of him. “Shit. Sorry.”
The boy spat, raising his head to meet Orlando’s eyes.
And it was him. Orlando’s breath caught in his throat,
suddenly aware that his hands were on his waist,
supporting him from the fall. Blue eyes locked to his
and Orlando felt his heart race more then he had ever
felt. There was something there, some hidden secret
that Orlando deeply wanted to expose.
*~*~*~*~*
Elijah knew that Orlando was watching him as he
played. It was beginning to grate at his nerves, drive
him closer and closer to the edge of insanity. He
hated when people stared at him, that’s why he knew he
could never be someone famous, it would drive him
crazy to think his poster was decorating millions of
girl’s bedrooms.
The warning bell had pulled Elijah from his thoughts
and he headed with his friends up the steps, not
noticing Orlando stepping up with him. But just then
the person in front of him stopped, causing him to
walk right into the back of them and fall backwards,
pushing into a person so they both fell back onto the
ground, Elijah on top.
He moved to apologize, when he met the eyes of the
person and recognized them immediately. Orlando.
Then he became aware of hands on hips, legs touching…
thighs touching. Chest touching. Too close. Too close
for any form of comfort.
Quickly he jumped up, brushing off his clothes and
looking down at Orlando. A part of him wanted to say
thank you, to hold out his hand and help the boy up,
but a call from one of his football players up the
stairs made him swallow, turn, and jogging quickly
off.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“Orli, you okay?” Lexis held out her hand, pulling her
friend up and off the ground.
Orlando’s eyes and attention, however, where on the
spot in the crowd that Elijah had just disappeared
through. He wasn’t in physical pain, the fall had
barely hurt, but for some reason his heart ached just
a little.
“Yeah Lex, I’m fine. Come on, we’re gonna be late for
class,” Orlando linked arms with the girl and headed
back up the stairs, deciding to push thoughts of
Elijah from his head at the moment.
*~*~*~*~*~*
“Great game tonight Wood!”
“Akron never knew what was coming!”
“Great toss Wood!”
People called to him from all over. He smiled, still
sweaty and tired from the game they’d just won, his
arm around Lindsey’s waist as they moved through the
throng of people.
It was a great feeling, being the person to lead the
team to victory. A smile lit up his face as his
players patted him on the shoulder, his girlfriend
gave him a kiss, the cheerleaders fawned over him. It
made him feel like he could be a normal boy.
But then he turned and spotted his sister walking
towards him, her fingers laced with another girl that
he recognized as Lexis. Following them was him. And
Elijah had to stop the urge to groan. He did not want
to put up with him.
“Great game Lij!” Veronica smiled and hugged him,
making a face as she pulled back. “Man you smell!” She
giggled and pulled Lexis forward, linking their hands
once more. “This is Lexis. And that’s Orlando.”
“Nice to meet you,” Elijah nodded, shaking Lexis hand
and then Orlando’s.
Their hands met and their eyes locked. A spark seemed
to shoot through them at an indefinable speed.
Everything around them froze as their breaths
quickened, raced and froze. It was just them.
Then the world went back into motion, Elijah jerked
his hand back, receiving a strange look from Veronica
but shrugging it off by running his hand through his
sweat wet hair.
Veronica raised her eyebrow at Lexis, who shrugged,
then turned back to Elijah. “So what are you doing
tonight?”
“Uh… there’s an after party thing,” Elijah shrugged,
trying to pretend he was not so easily affected by
Orlando’s nearness, even though he was more then three
feet away from him.
“Cool, can we come?” Veronica looked patiently at him.
She knew he would say yes. Elijah was not the type of
person to decline someone’s request, especially his
sister’s, when there were others around.
“Uh… sure, why not.” Elijah nodded, glancing nervously
at Orlando then back at the two girls. “Veronica, you
wanna ride with me?”
“Oh I’ll ride with Lexis, but Orli needs a ride,”
Veronica smiled, feeling Lexis beside her smile and
try to bite back her giggle.
“I could ride with-“ Orlando began but was cut off by
Lexis hopping over to him and stepping subtly on his
feet. “Ow!”
“You can’t ride with us,” Lexis informed. “I’m driving
and taking Dom and Billy too.”
“Lij doesn’t mind,” Veronica spoke up, moving to stand
by her brother. “Do you bro?”
Elijah swallowed and forced himself to shake his head.
He couldn’t be in polite. Besides which he had to show
that he wasn’t affected by Orlando in any way at all.
“Great, we’ll just follow you guys okay? Meet you by
the cars!” Veronica said happily, pulling Lexis off
with her.
Orlando watched them leave, scowling softly. He knew
they were just forcing him to spend time with the boy
who had so captured his attention as of late.
*~*~*~*~*~*
The car was silent as Elijah started it, only the
sounds of the seat belt clicking distracted him.
Orlando’s arm brushed his and he quickly pulled it
away, trying not to let his breath hitch at the spark
of electricity it sent soaring through him.
Ironically enough, sickeningly so, Lindsey decided to
ride with her cheerleader friends so it was only the
two boys in his car.
After a few moments of driving Elijah couldn’t stand
the silence so he flipped on the radio, praying the
music could help distract him from the almost warmth
he could feel coming from the man next to him.
A woman’s voice filled the radio, her words stark and
extremely to close in topic to what he was feeling.
“You try to say he doesn’t make you – feel this way
You try to laugh it off like it’s – all okay
But never a day goes by – when you don’t feel him
watching
It drives off the wall but it’s –all okay
Because being off the wall makes you feel okay
Because being off the wall is where he is”
Elijah quickly flipped off the radio, clearing his
throat and drumming a meaningless tune on his steering
wheel. “So uh… how’s school?”
“Fine.” Orlando answered shortly, seemingly startled
by his words. “You?”
“Good. Fine.” Elijah nodded glancing briefly out of
the corner of his eye at Orlando before the light
turned green and put his foot on the gas. “So uh… are
you involved with anyone?”
Elijah wanted to kick himself the minute he asked it.
He didn’t even know what drove him to ask, it just
sort of came out and now he was truly regretting it.
“No.” Orlando shook his head. “I mean, I only know two
other gay guys and they are together, so that doesn’t
leave me much room for relationships. But I am
interested in someone.”
Elijah had never heard Orlando speak so much and he
realized that he had startlingly desire to hear him
speak more. Then his words slammed into his brain and
he jerked the steering wheel, quickly swerving to get
the car back in his lane. “Shit… sorry. Um… who?”
“Huh?” Orlando looked over at him, a curious
expression in his eyes.
“Who… uh… are you… you know…” Elijah trailed off, not
sure he could bring himself to ask the actual
question. He was still unsure as to why he’d even want
to know who a gay boy would be interested in.
Though there was that slight chance, and slimmer of
hope that it could be him. Which made him feel
disgusting for even thinking it.
“You,” Orlando said simply, shrugging and leaning
against the door of the car.
This time Elijah did swerve off the road, pulling over
and slamming the car into brake at a quick rate. His
breath came in short gasps, as if he’d just finished
his game and now was trying to have a full out
conversation.
Orlando’s eyebrows went up, a smirk on his face.
“Something wrong?”
Elijah slowly turned to him, blinking bright blue eyes
at him. “I’m not gay.”
“Yeah okay… whatever,” Orlando shrugged, picking at
his nails in an obviously bored way.
“I’m not,” Elijah insisted, almost pleading him to
understand.
“Okay,” Orlando nodded, his eyebrows raised. “You’re
not gay. I get it.”
“Then why…” Elijah scrunched together his eyebrows in
confusion. “Why do you like me if I’m not gay? I mean…
you’ll never get to be with me.”
“Let me ask you Elijah,” Orlando leaned forward,
coming close to Elijah in the dark. “Have you ever had
a crush on a person you couldn’t have?”
Elijah thought about Orlando and how much he wanted to
do things with him that no guy should want to do with
a guy. “Yeah… I guess.”
“Then you understand,” Orlando leaned back and looked
out the window, signaling that he was done with the
conversation.
Elijah sighed and put the car in drive then took off
down the road once more.
