Chapter One
Orlando sat on the bench and watched as his charges flew to the playground. He smiled and pulled out his notebook, jotting down the time and the park he’d taken the kids to. He loved being a nanny, no, Au Pair, for Peter Jackson and his family. Katie and Billy were great kids and he loved them to pieces.
But even with a job he loved with a family he adored, Orlando felt like a big hole existed in his life. He was single and, outside of the Jackson family, he didn’t know anyone in New Zealand. He felt lucky to have found a family that didn’t care he was male, didn’t care he was gay, just wanting someone to take care of their kids and do a good job of it.
“Orli! Orli! ” Katie shrieked as she ran over to Orlando’s side.
“What? What?” Orli smiled as he put down the notebook.
“Billy pushed me off the swing!” Katie pointed a finger across the playground toward her brother who was running towards the monkey bars.
“He’s over at the monkey bars now, love.” Orlando kissed Katie’s cheek. “Go back and swing. I’ll keep an eye on him.”
Katie let out a sigh but quickly ran back to the swing, occasionally shooting glances towards her brother, who dangled from the monkey bars, a big grin on his face.
Orlando shook his head and leaned back against the bench.
“She’s adorable,” a voice said above him.
Orlando snapped his gaze away from the kids and looked up. The first things he saw were broad, strong shoulders. His eyes traveled higher, finding deep eyes and a wonderful mouth cocked into a soft smile. Orlando lost all train of thought. “Um, what?”
The man chuckled. “Your daughter. She’s adorable. Your son, too.”
Orlando’s eyes widened. “My dau...my so...oh Oh no They...they aren’t my kids.” He chuckled nervously. “I...I just watch them.”
The man’s smile widened as he gestured to the spot beside Orlando. “Can I sit?”
Orlando just nodded..
“I’m Karl,” the man said, holding out his hand.
“Orlando.” He shook Karl’s hand and was surprised by how strong Karl’s grip was.
“So you aren’t from around here, are you?”
Orlando started to play with a loose string on his shirt. “No, actually. I’m from England. Canterbury to be precise.”
“An Englishman in New Zealand? Well, how long have you been here?”
“A couple years now. I started working for Pete when Katie was three. She’s about to turn six. And Billy’s seven. I’m, uh, a little too young to be their father.” Orlando blushed slightly. This Karl had set something off in his body and he didn’t know how to react.
“And I’ve never seen you before? Well, I guess I’d better start paying attention.” Karl smiled at Orlando. “I mean, knowing I missed you all those other times.”
“Orli! You aren’t watching!” Katie called as she hopped off the swing and ran to Orlando’s side. “You said you’d watch.” She glared at Karl for taking Orlando’s attention away from her.
“I’m sorry, love. I was making a new friend. Katie, this is Karl.”
Katie continued to stare at Karl, sizing him up. “Mummy says you shouldn’t talk to strangers.”
“Your mummy is right. But your mummy trusts Orlando doesn’t she?” Karl asked as he leaned down to Katie’s level.
Katie looked from him to Orlando who nodded before turning her gaze back to Karl. “She does. Orli’s the best.”
“Well, he wouldn’t let me talk to you if he thought even a bit that I’d be bad, right?”
Katie shrugged. “I guess not.” She cocked her head to the side. “You’re ok, I guess.”
Karl smiled. “I hope I am. So, I’m Karl and you are...a princess I bet.”
Katie giggled as she wormed her way into Orlando’s lap. “I’m Katie. That monkey face is my brother, Billy.” She gestured towards Billy. “And he’s Orli, but you knew that I bet.”
“Orli. I think I like that.”
Orlando chuckled. “Well, it’s all Katie could say at first so I guess it stuck.”
“I’m gonna go swing now. Bye, Karl.” Katie slide off Orlando’s lap and headed back to the swings.
“She’s just adorable.” Karl grinned.
“I know. I love working for Pete and Fran.” Orlando smiled and looked over at Karl. “I mean, the pay is good, but I love the kids too.”
“I can see that. And you know what I would love?”
Orlando chuckled. “What?”
“To take you to dinner.”
Orlando sputtered a bit but managed to recover. “I...I think I’d like that.”
“Good. I’ll meet you outside the Italian place in town. You know, the one next to the cinema. Can’t remember the name for the life of me.”
“I know the place. Seven good?”
Karl nodded. “Perfect. I’ll see you at seven.” He stood up. “It was wonderful to meet you, Orlando.” He held out his hand.
Orlando smiled, shook Karl’s hand, and stood up as well. “Yes, the same here.”
Karl smiled one last time before heading off, away from the playground.
Billy and Katie came over to Orlando and looked in the direction Karl had gone.
“Where’d Karl go?” Katie asked as she snaked her hand into Orlando’s.
“He had to go, love.” Orlando turned to the kids. “But I think we’ll see him again.”
“I bet he left cause you smell, Katie,” Billy said, sticking his tongue out.
“No, you smell.”
“Hey, kids, stop.” Orlando knelt down between the children. “Come on, let’s go home, ok? I’ll pop a movie in.”
The kids beamed and forgot their argument.
“Can we watch The Little Mermaid?” Katie asked, practically bouncing.
“No Monsters Inc!” Billy shouted, tugging on Orli’s shirt.
“Mermaid!”
“Ok, ok, stop or I’ll pick something...something educational. Let’s go.” Orlando took their hands and stood between them before making his way out of the park.
Billy stuck his tongue out at Katie again.
“Wanker,” Katie said.
Orlando stopped dead in his tracks and looked down at Katie. “What did you say?”
“Um, wanker?” Katie lowered her head and blushed.
“Katie...” Orli started.
Her head popped up, her eyes wide as saucers. “You say it!”
“I say a lot of things, but that doesn’t mean you should say them. At least in front of your mother, ok?”
Katie nodded. “She’d get really mad, huh?” she asked, staring right up into Orlando’s eyes.
“Yes, at both of us. Let’s go home.” Orlando led the children out of the park, eager to get home and get ready to meet Karl.
