A/N: Billy and Viggo have a talk. Not Beta-ed, all screw-ups are my own.
"Rrmmmph..."
The shrill ring of his telephone woke Viggo out of a comfortable doze. He glared down at the hapless instrument, as if asking it how it dared disturb his slumber. His eyes moved from the ringing phone to the clock on the wall. 10:52. Viggo wondered who might be calling him ... the usual suspects-Orli or the hobbits ... had all gone out together for the night. On the fifth ring, it finally crossed Viggo's sleep-addled mind that instead of trying to guess who was calling him, he could just answer the phone. He pressed the "talk" button and mumbled " 'lo?" .
"Viggo? Is that you? You sound tired, did I wake you? I'm sorry, I woke you up, didn't I? "
"Whoa, Billy! Slow down! It's okay, I was just dozing on the couch. What's wrong?" It had taken Viggo several seconds to cut through the run-on sentences and the heavy accent to figure out who was on the other end of the line. Once he realized it was Billy, Viggo became a bit concerned. First of all, Billy was not one to ramble on at such a frantic pace. Also, as far as Viggo knew, Billy was supposed to be out with the other Hobbits and Orlando. Both of these facts taken together made Viggo realize that there was something upsetting Billy. And upsetting him quite a bit, apparently.
" I ...well ... it's just ... well ... you see ... I ..." Billy's complete lack of coherence made Viggo smile. He was pretty sure he knew what was troubling his friend, but also knew better than to say anything about it.
"Bill, do you want me to come over for a bit? I can tell something's on your mind. I'll bring some beer over and we can talk if you like."
"Would you mind, Viggo? I do need to talk ... " Billy's voice trailed off wistfully.
"I'll be there in 15 minutes, Billy. Ok? I'll see you then. Bye"
"Bye, Viggo. Thanks."
Viggo put his phone down, grabbed a six-pack of beer out of the fridge and headed out the door. Again, a small smile crept onto his face. Billy was normally so calm, so unflappable. There could be only one reason for him to be this agitated ... Billy must have finally figured out what Viggo had known weeks ago. He couldn't help smiling as he thought back to the conversation he had had with Orlando the previous week concerning two certain hobbits. Orlando's words came back to his mind, "Billy needs someone more ... sensible to talk to..." " Must tread carefully tonight ... don't fuck anything up ... make sure you listen to what he says and don't assume..." keeping these thoughts foremost in his mind, Viggo pulled into Billy's driveway and walked up to the front door. He looked thoughtfully at the door, then raised his hand and very gently pressed his fingertips to the door. He whispered softly to himself, "Don't fight it, Bills ... don't fight it. He loves you, too." Then he smiled and knocked on the door.
Billy opened the door and smiled sheepishly up at Viggo. "Hey, Vig. I really appreciate you coming over. I feel stupid for dragging you into this, but I really need to talk to someone else before I lose my mind."
Viggo handed Billy a beer then walked past him to put the other s in Billy's refrigerator. Returning to the living room, he sat down on the end of the couch opposite Billy, then shifted around to look at the younger man. "OK, Billy ... out with it. What's bothering you?"
"Dom." Billy whispered the word so softly that Viggo barely heard it ... might not have heard it at all if it hadn't been what he was already expecting to hear. He nodded calmly as he studied Billy.
"And what's wrong with Dom?" Viggo asked, intentionally misreading Billy's meaning.
"Nothing!" The word dropped suddenly and explosively from Billy's lips. " And that seems to be where the problem lies." Billy sighed softly, then turned back to face Viggo. Gathering his courage up in both hands, he said softly, "I think I'm in love with Dom, Viggo."
Viggo allowed himself a tiny smile, but had to bite his lip to keep from informing Billy that Yes, of course he was in love with Dom ... everyone but he and Dom knew he was in love with Dom ... Dom was equally smitten with him ... and the sooner they got their respective heads out of their asses and just told each other how they felt, the happier they and everyone around them would be. "Have you considered just telling Dom the truth?" Viggo couldn't help laughing when he saw the look to complete and utter horror on Billy's face. " I'm guessing that would be a 'no' then, huh Bills?"
Billy opened his mouth and shut it a couple times before he could finally force the words out. "Are you completely insane, Viggo? There's no way I could ever tell Dom that! Never! " his voice dropped back down to a bare whisper. "and that's what my problem is. I love him too much to tell him how much I love him. I can't risk losing him, losing his friendship. It means too much to me ..."
Viggo gazed at the young man sitting on the opposite end of the couch. He could tell Billy was near tears at the thought of losing Dominic. Seeing the pain written so clearly on his friend's face reassured Viggo that he had made the right decision when Orlando had approached him last week about fixing up the two men. He shrugged, sighed, and then said in his Aragorn voice, "Look at me, Billy."
Billy looked up at Viggo, curiosity driving out his sadness for the moment.
"I'm going to ask you something, Billy, and I want you to answer me honestly. Think about it for a few minutes if you need to, but give me an honest answer. "
For a moment Billy could only stare at Viggo, feeling slightly intimidated by the look in the other man's eyes. Viggo looked like he was about to say or do something he was afraid he might regret and he wasn't too happy about it. Still, Billy realized that he trusted Viggo completely and he needed his guidance right now. He nodded his acquiesence.
"When was the last time you looked at Dom?"
Billy sputtered and stuttered. THIS was Viggo's huge, dramatic question? He stared at Viggo in confounded silence for a moment before he finally replied, "The last time I looked at Dom? I don't know, Vig! I look at Dom all the time! What kind of question ..." Billy's voice trailed off as he looked into Viggo's eyes.
"No, Billy, you don't look at Dom all the time. You look at Dom's nose, or Dom's hair. Dom's ear, his eyebrow, his forehead ... you look in Dom's direction all the time, yes. But when was the last time you actually looked into Dominic's eyes?"
"When ... " The confusion evident in Billy's voice was mirrored by the creases in his brow. " Viggo, what in the hell are you talking about?"
"Dom's eyes, Billy. That's what I'm talking about. When was the last time you actually looked into Dom's eyes? It's been a while hasn't it?"
Billy furrowed his brow in concentration, trying to remember when the last time really had been. He loved Dom's eyes ... he always had, ever since the first day they met. They always made Billy think of the ocean ... sometimes a stormy blue, sometimes a smoky grey, sometimes green, sometimes an enchanting mix of all three ... um, right...what was the question again? With a start, Billy realized that Viggo was right. It had been a while since he had actually looked Dominic in the eye. He was always afraid that Dom would be able to see everything Billy was fighting so hard to hide. "Yeah," he finally whispered softly, "I guess it has been a while. But how did you ... "
"Because, Bills, If you had been looking, you wouldn't be sitting here like this tonight. Look at me." Viggo took Billy's chin in his hand and tilted his head up so that he could look into Billy's eyes. "Everything I'm seeing in your eyes right now, I've also seen in Dom's eyes. The longing, the fear, the love ... it's all there, Billy. Trust me, Dom is just as mad for you as you are for him. And he's just as frightened of jepoardizing your friendship. I can't tell you what to do, Bills. That has to be a decision that you and Dom make on your own. But I can tell you that he loves you. "
"He loves me? You mean like 'in love' loves me and not 'best mates' loves me?" Billy's mind was having a hard time processing what Viggo had just said. Dom was in love with him? Was it possible? "This is going to change everything, isn't it, Viggo?"
"Of course it will, Billy. You know it will. Your friendship will never be the same. What you have to decide now is whether you're ready to deal with those changes or not."
Viggo sat holding his breath as he watched Billy ponder over his words, struggling to come to a decision. Finally, Viggo said softly, "Do you want my advice, Billy?" The other man nodded and whispered "Please..." in a voice so quiet that Viggo barely heard it. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but Orli is right about one thing. You can't be afraid to take a chance. Call Dom. Tell him you need to see him and ask him to come over here. Then sit him down here on the couch and look-and I mean really look- into his eyes. Show him what he needs to see ... look for what you need to see. Open up to each other. Yes, you're taking a big chance, but it's worth the risk. True love always is. Call him, Billy. Don't hurt needlessly any more." Viggo stood up and placed a gentle kiss on Billy's forehead then repeated softly, "Call him."
Billy nodded as he finally found his voice again. "I will. I'll call right now. Thank you, Vig. " Viggo nodded and blew Billy a kiss as he walked out the door. Billy waited until he heard Viggo's car pull away and then he picked up his cell phone and punched the speed-dial for Dom's number.
