Title: Of Dropping Eaves and Not Exactly Spying

Disclaimer: Ummm. Not true? I suppose it *could* have happened, but I will never know for sure, will I?
Summary: Someone's looking when they're not supposed to be!
A/N: Written for the
lotrpschallenge number 28, "Half Open Doors".
(Since it's non-pairing specific, it didn't seem fit to post at
monaboyd, so am posting here. Hi, by the way...haven't posted to this community before.)
I watched as you walked into the room and swung the door closed behind you. It didn’t shut all the way but you didn’t notice. I meant not to follow, I meant not to listen or peep in. I meant not to invade your privacy. I also meant not to fall in love with you. And since that had happened against my better judgement, I figured what the hell. You probably weren’t doing anything I hadn’t seen before.
I heard you muttering to yourself before I caught a glimpse of you moving to and fro, moving things about. I felt slightly uneasy with this “spying and eavesdropping”, but it was probably fear of being spied myself, rather than actual guilty conscience. In fact, this really wasn’t much different than the many times I stole secretly into your room to watch you as you lay sleeping. The only difference being that there was a much greater chance of being caught this time.
I held my breath and listened. You were humming, but I could not make out the tune. I strained my ears and inched closer to the half-open door. I could see you taking things out of the closet and packing them into boxes. Then you stacked all the boxes along the wall by the door and I froze, desperate that you wouldn’t spot me. You didn’t. You then moved to the far side of the room, took wooden pieces out of a big box and began to assemble them. I don’t know how long I watched; enthralled with the graceful ease you had in putting together something so large, though I still hadn’t figured out what it was. Then I felt a sneeze coming on and tried desperately to muffle it. You looked up, but didn’t see me. I breathed a sigh of relief, but decided to take a short break from my spying. Instead I leaned against the wall and listened to the quiet banging and drilling.
After what seemed like hours, though I’m sure it was only a few minutes, the banging ceased. I didn’t yet dare to peek in again so I simply waited. Then I heard you humming again. Curious, I poked my head into the door-way and let out a gasp of surprise. That was enough to grab your attention. You turned to me and smiled, “I thought I had closed the door.”
I didn’t answer, but stood there with my mouth gaping wide. You laughed and shook your head at me, “Well come in then. You’ve already stood outside the door for an hour and a half. Come see what it is that I’ve been doing while you tried to spy on me.”
I laughed, because you knew me so well. I should have known better than to try to hide. I stepped into the room and nodded my approval.
“You like it, then?”
I nodded again and you beamed, though I wasn’t sure why my opinion should matter. So I asked you.
And you looked at me curiously, like you weren’t sure if I was serious or not. After a moment, you seemed satisfied that I really didn’t know what this was all about.
“I want you to like it because it’s your new bed.” You told me.
“But this is your room.” I objected.
“This is our room.”
You smiled softly and I returned it. Then I closed the door all the way.
