Billy can still remember the first time he ever saw Dom. He can remember the way the wind was coming down from the mountains, swirling his hair in his eyes and making them water. He can remember the way the air smelled sweet and salty at the same time, and how the grass and dead leaves crunched under his feet as he walked through the set of what would soon become Rivendell.
He can recall hearing birds chirp and trill, and hearing voices, muted and distant, though the people speaking were right near him. He can picture the glare of the sun as it bounced off the equipment on set and the sides of the trailers and how the heat made everything look like it was under water.
What he can't remember is what he first said to Dom, or what Dom first said to him. He can't remember the sound of Dom's voice or the tone in his voice or the clothes he was wearing. He's not even sure he responded when Dom spoke, can't be certain that he answered or acknowledged him in any way.
Every now and then, he relives that moment in time, and tries to bring back the memories, tries to overcome the amnesia that's struck him where Dom is concerned. It's hard, and it's frustrating, but Billy feels that if he can't, he'll never be whole again.
***
The first time they work together on set, Billy catches himself screwing up lines and forgetting his staging. He discovers that he's clumsy and out of sorts whenever he's around Dom, and this is something that he thinks he should probably do something about, but can't quite think of what to do. His mind doesn't seem to be working properly at all any longer, hasn't since he arrived in New Zealand, and he's pretty sure it has to do with Dom's eyes.
They're blue and kind of frosty, Billy thinks, like a pond frosted over in the early part of winter when everything is just starting to change and die and the ice on the lake is like a siren's song, clear and beautiful, but treacherous.
The only thing that Billy is sure of is that if he lets himself drown in Dom's eyes, he'll end up paying dearly for it.
***
Billy takes a break, just to cool down and try to get his bearings back. He sits on the ground, under a tree, leans back and lets the bark bite into his skin. The day is cool, but sunny, and when he shuts his eyes, everything turns red.
When he feels the nudge on his leg, he doens't look up right away. He thinks maybe he's imagining it, and doesn't want to get his hopes up that it's Dom.
But it is Dom, and when Billy sees him, sees that it's really him in the flesh and not a figment of his imagination, he bolts upright, spilling his tea all over his costume.
Dom doesn't laugh, like Billy expects, just stays still and silent, blue eyes boring into Billy's as if Dom is trying to read Billy's mind. Billy squirms a little, and turns his eyes away to look at the brownish stains forming on his clothes.
Dom shifts so that he's sitting directly beside Billy, lifts his arm around Billy's shoulder and pulls until Billy is snug against his side. Billy's afraid to move, afraid to break whatever spell Dom is under. His breathing is shallow and quick, and he gets so still he swears Dom will be able to hear his heart beating against his ribs.
Dom jostles him a little, says something innocuous about the next scene they'll be filming, but all Billy can hear is a rushing in his ears, like he's flying really fast through clouds and can't see his way to the ground.
Dom stands up and waves goodbye, leaving Billy leaning sideways, looking and feeling bereft of Dom's support, watching as the tea stains widen and darken.
***
Several days later Billy is trying to remember the last time he felt normal. It's getting further and further away from him, and he mentally reaches out for it just a little bit more to try to keep it from being lost forever.
He feels as though he's stumbling, his mind just twirling around and around like the leaves of Lothlorien.
Then, out of nowhere, or maybe he had been expecting it, Dom is there, taking his hand and talking to him again. Billy still can't hear him, but the rushing noises are lessening and it occurs to him that he can always read Dom's lips.
