lotrpschallenge 16. Swings!
Her babysitter, Jenny, is sitting on the picnic table, talking with an older boy. Nini doesn’t understand why; boys are gross. They like bugs, and Jermy from her class tried to hold her hand, but she pushed him down and ran to the swing set and pumped her legs as fast as she could. Jermy couldn’t touch her if she was swinging. Nini knows that Jermy sometimes comes to this playground, so she runs over to the swing set just in case.
When she gets there, the swings are full. It’s three old men, swinging and laughing and talking, and Nini doesn’t understand why they’re there. Swings are for kids, duh. Nini likes the word duh; she heard Allison’s big sister say it once, and it sounded sisticated. Or something like that. So now Nini says it, too. Duuuuuuh. She’s about to go up to the men and tell them that the swings aren’t for grownups, but then she remembers something her Mommy said about Never Talking to Strangers, so she goes over to the slide and climbs the ladder. She counts every step, because she can count to twenty now, and there are seventeen steps to the top, and that’s a long way up. When she gets to the top, she sits down on the platform, because it’s too far to the ground. She thinks about calling Jenny to help her down, but then she’d have to turn around on the platform, and Nini doesn’t want to do that. So she looks over to the swing set again.
There are three men, Nini knew that already, but now she can see that they’re different. One is tall with dark hair, and one is short with dark hair, and one is short with blonde hair. She can tell they’re tall and short, because the tall one has to swing his legs around to the sides so his feet don’t scrape the stones under the swing. Some of the grade eighters have to do that, too. The tall one isn’t swinging as high as the other two, but he watches them as they push and pull and laugh, and the chains go dangley at the top, before they swing down again.
“I’m flying, Dom!” The short dark-haired one shouts, letting go of the chains and holding his arms out as he swings forward.
“You daft cunt, hold on! You’ll kill yourself, and I don’t want to carry your broken body back to Deb’s house.”
“Oh, don’t mind him, Orlando, he’s too stupid to get killed.” Nini’s eyes go wide as the short blond man swears. She is Not Allowed to say words like stupid. The short blonde man talks funny. So does the tall guy.
“Shuddup, Dom, ‘m not stupid.”
“Fell in love with Orlando, didn’t you? Pretty dumb thing for a smart bloke to do.”
“Pretty smart thing for a smart, good looking bloke to do. ‘Specially since he’s in love with me, too.”
Nini thinks this is weird. Maybe the two dark-haired guys are married? Darcy’s got two mommies, so maybe these are two daddies? And maybe their kids are in the park, so that’s why they’re on the swings.
“And you’re not really one to talk, Dominic. You fell for the both of us, which makes you twice as stupid as either of us.”
“Sometimes, Elijah, your lack of formal maths training shows.”
“Fuck off, wanker.”
Nini is Definitely Not Allowed to say the f-word. Her mom would kill her if she ever did. She never heard the wanky word, though. Maybe that’s like the f-word, but with a w? She thinks that she won’t say it, just in case. Wait, though. The men are slowing down their swings, and Nini’s mind is going faster than a new show of Yu-Gi-Oh. All three of the guys are in love? That is really weird. No one has three daddies. Well, maybe? Sandy has two mommies and two daddies, and Nini only has Mommy, so maybemaybe it’s ok to have three daddies. The swings are stopped now, and the men have gotten off. The short blonde one moves between the two dark-haired ones, holding his arms out for a hug. Nini wants a hug now, too. The tall guy kisses the blonde guy on the forehead, and the short dark-haired guy kisses him on the cheek.
“We love you, too, Dommie.” Nini can’t tell who said this, but they’re all smiling and walking out of the park with their arms around each other. And Nini really wants a hug, and after that she wants to go on the swings, so she takes a deep breath and pushes off the bars at the top of the slide, and for a minute, she understands what the short guy said about flying.
