"Dan, what was that all about, in the van?" asks Sean. "It's really distracting when there's wrestling in the wayback, and shoes flying out the window. And you, Monkey-what kind of example are YOU setting? The girls behave better than you do! Maybe we'll ask Hannah to come babysit you two, and let the three little ones have the run of Disneyland."
Lij cringes. He hates to upset Sean, who's been so good to him, and Christine, who let him invite Daniel along on this trip. Sean knows it's just a nice thing to do, no ulterior motives-Dan's still just a kid, three years younger than Lij was when he got knocked ass-over-teakettle by the revelation of Dom. "I'm sorry, Sean," says Lij. "I should have just answered Dan's question. I didn't know he'd get carried away like that, but I'll not let it happen again." (God, no, thinks Elijah to himself. I didn't bring anything, no lube, no condoms-it's just a nice outing with Sean and Chris and the girls, I'm a chaperone, a grown-up, and it's just a nice thing to do for Dan while he's here doing interviews for Azkaban.)
Sean looks into Lij's eyes, searching for the truth he knows only too well how to find. Satisfied for the moment, he puts a hand on Lij's shoulder and smiles. "Ok, Monkey, I trust you. But be careful with the younger ones-all of them. If you need any help, ask me or Christine-you know we're here for you always."
"Thanks, Sean," Lij smiles. He catches Dan's puzzled look, and smiles again inside himself. Patience is its own reward, he thinks, admiring the light carving Dan's cheek from shadow. Dom waited for me, and it was wonderful, wonderful. If I can be a friend to Dan that way-the time will be well invested. "Daniel-where do you want to start? Space Mountain? Or Johnny Depp-Land?"
Dan smiles, and grabs Lij's hand. "I don't care where we start-let's just get going. We'll meet you all in Main Street after 2 hours. Have fun Ally, Liza, Moll-be good to your dad and mum. Come on Lij!" he hollers, tugging a not so reluctant Elijah after him .
Sean shakes his head and mutters to himself, watching the two run through the crowd. Well, he thinks, I hope Lij has learned something. And I hope Dom does come into town tomorrow-it's going to take a lot to keep Monkey on the ground this week, and I can't do it alone.
