They shoot single, attractive, successful men, don’t they?
Orlando is convinced that his fans believe his life is a storybook. Why not? He’s beautiful in the way that woman faint for him. Cry for him. Cry for his beauty. He laughs when he thinks about women crying for him. It’s so Michael Jackson. Screaming fans wanting to touch him, buy his worn boxers. The thoughts are too much for him. He receives gifts from people he doesn’t know. He receives party invitations from people that he does know. Why not? He’s beautiful in the ways that people want his attention, if only for a second. People want to have him over, if only for the publicity. People want to bask in his glowing presence, if only for the after glow.
“Man, you need to get with the program” Elijah shouted over his fifth Long Island Ice Tea. (Dom swore to Lighe that it was the only non- alcoholic drink in the bar)
Orlando looked up at Elijah. He knew what this was about. It was always the same thing. Why wasn’t he with someone? They all needed to know.
“I think he’s just being stubborn” Dom laughed from across the table, glancing at Billy to see if he was the only one noticing Elijah’s drunkenness.
“I THINK HE NEEDS SOME ASS!” Elijah fell out of his chair laughing and choking; Billy and Dominic giggled until the tears rolled down their faces in rivers.
Orlando didn’t need this tonight; he had dealt with ‘this discussion’ before. But tonight and he didn’t know why, but he felt, as if he heard another thing about his singleness he would choke the one responsible.
“Orli, mate, are you feeling all right?” Dom asked, thank God someone noticed, but just as quickly-
“Don’t get too close there, Dom, you don’t know when was the last time he had a good fuck, he might attack” Billy was truly amazing, just when you think he was the kind of man you could take to meet your mother, he said something like that. Or Elijah who would say something like this:
“ I think your right Billy, he looks kinda horny right now” Elijah was an ass.
“Is that what that look is? I thought he had to fart” Billy was also an ass.
“I think I’m ready to turn in. Orli, are you riding with me?’ And Dom was his savior.
“Yeah, sorry to leave you boys so early” Truth was if Dom wasn’t holding him with a ‘don’t worry, calm down, we’re about to leave’ look, he would have bolted.
While Dom was doing the right thing by saying his respectful (and not so respectful) goodnights to the group, Orlando was standing back and looking at their table and the guest who occupied it.
Billy. Scottish, honey-tongued, maniac who was his best friend and worst enemy (it all depended on the time of day, really). He loved him. Would do anything for him. Almost anything. (He would not wear a kilt and dance like Madonna, freak). Love was always felt when he looked at Billy…. Then there was Elijah.
Elijah. The boy just didn’t know what he did to Orlando, and his leaving wasn’t all about the teasing. It had a lot to do with the way Elijah looked, all flushed and blushed with alcohol. All giggles and smiles. All big eyes and loose lips. All Orlando could stand. Maybe Dominic knew what this was about, that’s why he came to his rescue. Maybe, but he doubted it. Dominic was the kind of bloke who avoided knowing things, avoided seeing things. He said it came in handy when there was a fight, he doesn’t know anything, didn’t see anything.
What Dom knew about Orli was that he didn’t want to see anyone for the simple reason that he didn’t want to be in the book called Superstars And The People Who Date Them And Then Hate Them. What he didn't know about Orli’s dating situation was that there was a big block there. Elijah.
“Are you ready?” Dom was looking slightly concerned now.
“Yeah, just thinking” Orli looked back at the table one last time. Elijah looked up at him and grinned.
“I’m coming over tonight” Oh yeah, he was drunk, but Orlando didn’t doubt he would do it. The man was true to his word. Even his drunken word.
“I think you should go home and get some sleep” He was older and therefore responsible, right?
“No, I think you want me to come over” Elijah’s eyes had dilated and changed colors in the last ten seconds. But he would still play this cool. Billy was looking and Dom was trying not to look.
“Really? Then come over, but if you throw up on anything you will not be invited again and the Playstation is broken so bring yours over” He had done it. Dom was still staring at something in the corner of the room and Billy was ordering another round (The flirting had stopped, so he figured nothing else to see). But Elijah knew what he just did; he just made a way for him to come over, without anyone suspecting anything. He had just invited him over. Elijah would bring his Playstation, but he would also bring that look he had on his face right now. And that would be enough.
The roads were dark and clear. The night was so beautiful that neither of them talked on the way to Orlando’s house. Well, at least he told himself that’s why they didn’t talk. Dom had a look on his face that was hard to decipher. Like it was in a language that only Billy understood, or maybe Elijah. Orlando sure as hell wasn’t getting it. Not until they pulled into the driveway and Dom started talking.
“ I love you and I love Lighe and I don’t want to see anyone get hurt. Billy may not have seen it-“
“I thought you didn’t want to see it either” Orlando knew he should just shut up and let him talk but it was hard when Dom rarely talked like this to him. He wanted to be a part of the conversation.
“I don’t. I don’t want to see or know or anything and I’m not saying you and Lijah were putting it out there like that, but I saw. And I just don’t want anything bad to happen. Promise me nothing bad will happen.”. He sounded truly helpless and sad, like watching the boat sail into the iceberg and knowing you’re the only one who sees it. So he lied and hoped that it wasn’t a lie.
“Nothing bad will happen. I promise I wont let anything bad happen” He put as much sincerity in those words as he could muster. Because he had been hoping for a quick fuck (he still didn’t want to be in Superstars and The People Who Date Them and Then Hate Them), but Dom had just made it more. How could he make it more when he wasn’t a part of it? Because everybody they knew would be involved if this blew up. Dom had just made him aware of how close the ship was to the iceberg. And now all he felt was the pressure to avoid the wreckage.
