Elijah Wood/Jake Gyllenhaal

Elijah confidently popped the last of an orange into his mouth. “I’ll kick your ass at MarioKart any day.”

“Yeah?” Jake raised his eyebrows then laughed. He had one of those laughs that reverberated throughout his body: he hunched his back, as if he felt the need to hide his grins from the public, and his eyes became creased like Elijah’s did when someone managed to tickle him on the back of his neck.

“Yup.” Elijah grabbed another orange and dug his thumb into the thick skin, cringing as tangy droplets splashed onto his face.

Jake giggled, a dimple appearing by the upper corner of his mouth. Somehow, even a giggle was becoming on him. “Here, I got it,” he said, leaning forward and swiping his index finger across Elijah’s cheeks. He then held out his glistening fingertip with a questioning look on his face.

The orange became very heavy in Elijah’s hand. “Huh?” he asked dumbly.

Jake shrugged and brought his finger to his own mouth, sucking off the liquid in one swift pucker. Elijah suddenly felt embarrassed and concentrated on peeling the orange in his hand. He tried to ignore the hot wave of red that he knew was creeping over his ears as Jake settled back into his chair.

“So when is this video game showdown?” Jake was asking.

Elijah glanced up to see Jake giving him a quirky smirk. “Anytime you feel like getting kicked down a notch or two,” he replied, and held out an orange slice, his hand dripping with sticky juice.

The smell of citric acid shimmered in the air as Jake plucked the fruit from Elijah’s hand, fingers skating across his wet palm. He bit into the slice, orange pulp spilling out against his teeth. “You’re on.”
