“We’re never going to be close like that again, are we?” Dom asked, leaning back against the wall next to the kitchen doorway. His voice had shrank and he curled to match the emotions his tone gave away so clearly that he could hear Orlando sigh in guilty resignation on the other end. It was that sigh that caused the bitter sting of tears to only be closed back, eyes tightly shut to hide the emotion. It was not like anyone would see the tears fall but to cry over that? He didn’t want to upset Orlando.
“No,” Orlando sighed, already curled up on his chair in the hotel in Spain. He ran a hand back through his hair, he felt horrible for admitting it. “We’ll never be like that again, Sblom, we can try as hard as we wish and as we do, but those days are past and the world still spins, it’ll only put us farther apart with time,” he heard the sniffle on the other end. Dom was crying, he had made Dom feel that way, but rather the world had done so.
“We both believe in Fate, mate,” Orlando reminded the other man. “Fate brought us all to New Zealand and Fate set your career on the path it is now, and set me upon mine. We play the cards we are dealt, and life is not poker, you cannot trade in cards for something better.”
“I’ve always been shite at card games,” Dom muttered as he threw the tissue away from him as he regained a degree of composure. “But I’m going to stay in this pseudo-rock star life and you’ll continue to grow in status,” he whispered. “You’ll replace Brad and Johnny both, filling their molds and creating something new…and New Zealand shall become a fond memory, just like me…”
Orlando went silent and he went still. His hold on the phone went slack, the pure shock of hearing his friend, someone that he had been the closest to out of all the Hobbits while filming the principal photography was now saying that he’d actually allow the other man to fade away to nothing but a memory. But it was true, he spent his days with those considered the elite among Hollywood and he spent his time either in hiding or in luxury.
“I…I won’t let it happen, no matter what the distance between us, I won’t lose our friendship, I won’t lose what we created and treasured,” Orlando promised. “I won’t let the world pull us apart, I won’t let anything but the miles come between us,” he elaborated. Determination rang true in his voice, his eyes intently focused at nothing in particular before him. Dom could tell that Orli meant it all and a smile spread over his face, living in his eyes and lingering in his voice.
“Nothing but the miles,” he echoed softly. “When you have your break, find me, and we’ll rid ourselves of those bloody miles and tear up the town and the shore once more, like nothing has changed in the past years,” Dom proposed, the smile growing and his voice returning to it’s more jovial nature.
“Sounds perfect, I’ll be in touch, Sblom. Take care…and talk to you same time tomorrow,” Orlando added the last bit with a bit of a laugh that was matched with Dominic’s own. It seemed that no matter how many miles came between them or what the world dealt them, the two kept in near daily contact with one another. Letting nothing but the miles separate them, though their fears and minds proved most challenging. But, in the end it was nothing but the miles.
