Universe Machine by not_a_lamb

Universe Machine (Prologue/?)

Author: not_a_lamb
Pairing: unknown, Probably DM/VM with a smattering of BB/Liv Tyler (nothing graphic, I promise), and appearances from Orlando, Elijah, Sean Bean, and Ian.
Warning: blatant philosophizing, high school AU and WIP.
Summary: Physical Metaphysics class with Mr. Mortensen introduces Dom to unseen wonders--like love.
A/N 1: Beta'd by the beneficent silentdescent, without whom, this would be a mess.
A/N 2: I've the next chapter practically done. Should be up in a few days.

It wasn't an unusual day. It was the first day back after summer vacation. Dominic Monaghan was relaxed and calm in the familiar classroom. He adored his school. Davidson's Alternative High specialized in students who learned with all five senses, rather than the traditional reading, writing, arithmetic approach. Some of Dom's favourite classes over the past three years had included Geometric Studies of Pool, Slam Poetry, and Acting. Cozied into the Santa Barbara hills, Davidson's had a reputation for small classes and passionate teachers. Each student took five classes and each class encompassed one weekday. This allowed students and teachers to really delve into subject matter and promoted day-long field trips to better investigate a topic.

Today, the first day of Dom's senior year, Dom and his best mate Billy Boyd were waiting patiently with the other three students in their class. The teacher was late, so the five of them were talking amongst themselves. Elijah, the sole Junior in the class, joked around with Orlando. Liv, a rocker chick, dressed in tight black jeans and a Van Halen t-shirt, absently played her guitar. Together, they basically killed time as they waited for class to start.

Dom was excited about Physical Metaphysics, though he didn't really understand how metaphysics could be physical. Metaphysics and religion were two of Dom's favourite topics. He couldn't wait for class to start, so where the hell was the teacher?

"This is getting ridiculous, Bill," Dom said. "I say we give it ten more minutes, then head to the beach."

The beach was where Dom felt most connected to the mysteries of the universe. He'd drive down the coast, away from the tourists and crowds. The stony beaches called to him. The sea welcomed him like a friend. Being in the ocean, being swept out to sea, Dom felt consumed, lost to the modern world. The sea felt primal to him, as though he were part of some age-old symphony. Connected to the mysteries of the universe. Because of this, he supposed, he wouldn't really be skipping class.

"Dunno, Dommeh," Billy replied. "I don't mind waiting. He must have a good reason for being this late. I say give 'im thirty."

"But Bil-ly--" Dom's whine was interrupted by the entrance of a barefoot man in paint-stained jeans. His sandy disheveled hair hung to his broad shoulders. There was a smear of crimson paint near his left ear, which made Dom smile. By any definition of the word, this man was a mess. Yet there was something in the way he carried himself, Dom thought, a sense of peace and patience. Almost like a priest or a wise man, Dom couldn't help thinking, but with a tinge of wildness in his eyes where his passion shone through. Dom was delighted.

He strode to the front of the class and picked up the attendance sheet. "Hello," he rasped, his voice as rough as the seas that dwelt in his stormy eyes. "I'm Viggo and I will be your guide in this journey." He looked down at the list of names. "And you are all here, at least physically." He shrugged distractedly, setting the sheet down on his podium. "So let us begin."

Dom's world would never be the same.
